Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli has created some of the most memorable animated films in recent memory. From the gut-wrenching “Grave of the Fireflies” to the celebrated “Howl’s Moving Castle,” Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki have made a name for themselves as three of the most prolific and important individuals in the field of animation.
The Denver Film Society, not content with just showing one or two of the films, will be screening almost every film in Studio Ghibli’s catalogue over the course of the next two months. Kicking off the retrospective are “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Whisper of the Heart,” and “The Cat Returns,” screening from August 17-23.
You can buy individual tickets, but for the die hard Ghibli fans, you can purchase >a pass for all fifteen films for $100. If you’re a Denver Film Society member, it’s only $75. This is a great deal for all hardcore cinephiles, and one you don’t want to miss out on. As an added bonus, kids under thirteen can get a “Special Kids Pass” for only $50.
The fest is presented by Charcoal Restaurant in cooperation with Nan Desu Kan and The Japan America Society of Colorado. All movies with an asterisk are dubbed in English, while a double asterisk means limited screenings dubbed in English are available. Otherwise, everything is in Japanese with English subtitles.
